《小妖在人间》主要讲述一位网络小说作家，写着千篇一律的穿越小说。觉得自己前途渺茫，突然有一天，他突然被逆向思维触动，决定写作一部反穿越的小说……
一战结束后白求恩在爱丁堡进修完成医学学业，并与弗朗西丝结婚。婚后，白求恩来到底特律挂牌行医。白求恩得到一个医院的知名大夫格兰特.马丁的赏识。马丁大夫请他到州立医院兼职，并不断把他自己的病人送到白求恩的诊所，两人达成合作关系。白求恩渐渐成了有钱人，但是他却发现自己陷入了“病人－医生－回扣”的制度之中，他日渐明朗地发现社会的种种不平等性和不合理性。来底特律后白求恩和弗朗西丝之间不断出现各种问题。此时他又因过度劳累换上了肺结核病。为此白求恩坚持和弗朗西丝离婚，弗朗西丝无奈之下只好接受。
本作以虚构的40多岁单身女性川嶋佳子所写日记著成的小说为蓝本，描绘了在某家公司作为派遣员工工作的佳子（松雪泰子）悲喜交加的日常生活。
